Supporting Education: The Dynamic Coast

We love telling people about what we do!  So, as part of our outreach, we have been busy behind the scenes collaborating with Geography Southwest and have produced some great school resources that show case our extensive datasets.   It’s been brilliant working with Geography SW – they have guided us through how to form lesson plans and communicate at the right level within the national curriculum.

You’re never too young to start learning about coastal processes, how data is collected and how decisions are made for coastal management.  In order to help students understand this, we have created engaging material for teachers, and others, to use in a lesson-ready format.

Key Stage 3 resources

We’re excited to introduce a comprehensive scheme of work focused on Start Bay, on the picturesque south coast of Devon. This pack comprises four lessons covering mapping, coastal processes, sediment cells and coastal management. With downloadable PowerPoints and worksheets, this resource equips teachers with everything they need to create an impactful scheme of work.

GCSE Resources

We have also developed GCSE resources featuring case studies on some of the most dynamic stretches of the southwest coast. These resources guide learners through investigations covering  the interaction of waves and beaches, changes to sand dunes, cliff retreat, the influence of river outlets on beaches, and the impact of tides on the coast.

You can download all of this for free from our website at  https://southwest.coastalmonitoring.org/resources/education/.

We also proudly host educational resources from our partners.  You can explore fascinating activities, including a GIS exercise focusing on wave overtopping, to further your learning experience.

We are passionate about empowering the next generation with knowledge about coastal dynamics.  It is a mission we share with Geography Southwest and other collaborative partners.  We invite everyone, be you educators, students and enthusiasts, to explore our diverse range of educational resources.  Who knows what you’ll learn about our dynamic coastlines?
