Coastal Assets

Welcome to the South West Coastal Asset Project! Our goal is to compile a comprehensive database of both manmade and natural assets that play a crucial role in Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM) along the South West coastline of England.

Presently, our asset database contains all functional assets in South Devon, Dorset, and partially in Cornwall. By early 2024, we will have a complete spatial representation of all assets across our entire South West region. This will provide a valuable resource for effective risk management and informed decision-making.

Our database comprises data obtained from partner organisations, such as the Environment Agency (EA) and Local Authorities.

All data will be inspected to the Environment Agency's T98 standard. Where assets are not inspected by either the Environment Agency or a Local Authority, the SWCM shall be responsible for inspection.

Asset Database

Our asset database is currently hosted internally.  However watch this space! as a public facing dashboard is being developed which will be hosted on the National Coastal Monitoring Website.

The asset dashboard will show the spatial extent of all functioning coastal assets within the South West.  It will also include critical information, mirrored on the Environment Agency's asset management structure.

Asset Inspections

The SWCM will oversee asset inspections on a rolling basis, using a risk based approach to prioritise critical coastal protection.  We anticipate that an asset will be inspected at least once every four years.

We have developed a bespoke T98 inspection application using a combination of ESRI Survey123 and FieldMaps. T98 trained asset inspectors will undertake routine inspections of all assets which are not already inspected by the Environment Agency or other Risk Management Authorities.

Coverage

We are interested in all coastal assets which form a flooding or coastal erosion protection function in the South West. The extent of our responsibility is defined by the Coastal Protection Act 1949 Schedule 4 limits - so any asset within this boundary will be on our database.

Coastal assets are vital in protecting our communities from flood and erosion risk. Knowing where they are, what type of asset they are, what function they provide, how high they are and what condition they are in is crucial for people involved in managing coastal risk.
