Asset Database – Falmouth excursion!

A key element of the SWCM programme is the creation of a database containing all coastal assets that provide a flood or erosion prevention function, for example a harbour wall or cliff with face protection. These assets are located and digitally mapped, storing various fields of information including ownership and condition grades. Assets along much of the South West coastline can be identified and digitised using online imagery or aerial photographs. However, in some remote areas, there is a lack of available imagery preventing identification of assets in the region. Knowing the existence and location of these assets is essential to ensure they are regularly inspected, and are in a safe, working order to protect coastal communities from flooding and erosion.

Where there is a lack of available imagery, it gives the SWCM team the perfect opportunity for a day out in the field to collect their own photos, which can later be used back in the office. The Fal River area contains numerous creeks with limited access to properties along the water’s edge. To address this challenge, two members of the team headed down to Falmouth to meet Dave the skipper, who accompanied them for a day on the water in search of assets.

Using a shallow-drafted boat, the team were able to approach within 30 metres of the shore to take high-quality pictures of each asset. Tide dependent locations such as Mylor Creek were surveyed at high tide ensuring the team could get close enough for photography. The photos were vital in completing digitisation of the whole of the south Cornwall area. These assets will now be surveyed to a T98 asset inspection standard using the SWCM Asset Inspection App.

This marks the beginning of an exciting assets project which, in time, will grow into an invaluable data source used to maintain a high standard of coastal protection in the southwest. Next time you’re at the coast, keep an eye out for any coastal assets around you; you may be surprised by their abundance!
